Write for SteamOS Gamer, Amiga Addict and Pixel Addict magazines

Contributor guidance for our print titles covering Steam, retro gaming, classic computing and tech history.

Ever wanted to see your name in a printed magazine?

You don't need to be a professional journalist to write for us. Most of our contributors are collectors, developers, hardware tinkerers and experienced gamers who have a passion for their hobby and enjoy sharing the stories behind the software, hardware or people from the tech industry. If that sounds like you, we'd like to hear from you.

Every issue of SteamOS Gamer, Amiga Addict and Pixel Addict leans on writers from outside the core team. Getting your byline in a printed magazine is a rewarding thing in its own right - seeing your article on the shelf at the local newsagents, something to share with friends and be genuinely proud of. On top of that, we can often help with review keys for games, hardware loans, access to events and interviewees, and we're always happy to give a mention to your own projects or products where it fits naturally.

Article ideas and topics we love

SteamOS Gamer Issue 1 magazine cover SteamOS Gamer (A5) Magazine for everything Steam

Got a game you can't stop playing, or found an indie gem worth shouting about? Share your experiences. Try a new VR title and let readers know if the motion sickness is worth it. Interview a developer or preview a title before launch. Prefer the hardware side? Take on the wider Steam and SteamOS ecosystem: Steam Machine, Steam Frame and every kind of Steam handheld (Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Legion Go etc), Proton and Linux gaming, emulation, or SteamOS tips and tweaks. And if you want to trace the history of a game franchise that shaped PC gaming, we're all ears.

Amiga Addict Magazine Issue 43 cover Amiga Addict (A4) Britain's best-selling Amiga publication

Playing a new Amiga game? Write a review! Dug out a classic and want to see how it holds up now? Even better. Tell us about restoring your first machine, fitting a Vampire or a PiStorm, or wrestling with the modern Amiga scene (OS4/PPC, MorphOS, AROS). Cover a demoparty, interview a coder from the golden era, or pull apart a coverdisk you've kept for decades. Recall your personal computing journey: share what growing up with the Amiga was like wherever you were in the world - the shop that sold you your first A500, or the user group that met in the pub.

Pixel Addict Issue 34 magazine cover Pixel Addict (A4) Tech history, hardware and retro gaming

A tech-history magazine in the broadest sense, with an endless scope for article ideas. Bought a new car? Write about the Sinclair C5 and the humble beginnings of electric vehicles! Collect CASIO watches? Share your collection and the story behind the pieces you've hunted down. Profile a machine everyone forgot, or interview a demoscener, a preservationist, or someone running a computer museum out of their garage. Trace the story of vintage software that changed how people used their computers, or a company that vanished. If it has a plug, a screen or a story worth telling, from ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 to calculators and camcorders, we're interested.

Across our publications we're always interested in: hands-on reviews, detailed features, developer and community interviews, deep dives into a game franchise or memorable hardware, hackers mods and restoration write-ups. Our readers also enjoy reports from expos and demoparties, opinion pieces with a real point of view, behind-the-scenes stories on lost or unreleased projects, and nostalgia pieces grounded in fact or wrapped in rose-tinted sentiment.

Not sure whether your idea fits? Pitch it anyway. Some of our best pieces started as "I'm not sure this is what you want, but..."

Free Steam games for contributors

SteamOS Gamer contributors can request Steam review keys and demos in exchange for coverage.

Request a review key

Keys are for genuine contributors only; misuse means revoked access. Amiga Addict and Pixel Addict contributors may also occasionally receive review copies of games, software or hardware.

Article length and word count

Our A4 magazines (Amiga Addict, Pixel Addict) have articles of approximately 600 words per page. A5 titles such as SteamOS Gamer run at around 450 words per page. Actual length varies with how many images you provide and the quality of those images. If you're unsure how long an article should be, please ask. If we give you a target word count, please try not to exceed it, as this helps avoid unnecessary editing to fit the space.

Contributor guidelines

Editorial voice and writing style

All articles should be written in English. If you've not seen content from our magazines before, we aim for something in the style of the classic British computing magazines many of us grew up with. Most articles adopt a friendly, conversational tone with a light layer of humour where it fits. Academic or overly formal writing generally isn't compatible with our house style.

Article layout and design

The layout of all pages is determined by our editor, so you only need to provide copy and images and we'll do the rest. You're welcome to suggest a layout, particularly if it's important to the article. However, please remember we try to keep layouts relatively simple; the more complex the layout, the longer it takes to produce and the less time we can spend on the rest of the magazine.

Article boxouts and sidebars

Boxouts (sidebars) are a great way of breaking your article down visually for the reader, especially if there are specific subtopics you want to tackle. If you'd like to include them, clearly mark them in the copy so we understand your intention. They generally sit best at the end of your submission, kept separate from the main copy.

Game and hardware review scoring

We have a fairly simple review scoring approach. Games are judged on four criteria: Graphics, Sound, Grab Factor and Playability, with each attracting a percentage score. The final verdict is a straight average of the four. Hardware verdicts instead include a Pros and Cons summary.

Images and screenshots

Articles are usually supported by images. Please don't embed them in your submission; provide them as separate files unless there's a good reason to embed.

Provide the highest-quality images you can. Low-quality images may be removed or replaced to maintain the magazine's print standards. If you're scaling up screenshots from classic computers or pixel art, make sure no anti-aliasing or other smoothing has been applied, as this destroys the crispness we need in print.

Any captions can be provided at the bottom of your article along with the image filename as it appears in your submission. We reserve the right to make caption changes where necessary to fit the layout.

Author photo and byline

We usually include a photograph of contributors alongside their article, so please send a photo of yourself with your submission. We prefer real photographs rather than avatars where possible; it gives your byline a more personal touch and readers like putting a face to a name.

Submission format and file types

We prefer LibreOffice, Microsoft Word or OpenDocument formats with plain text and images supplied separately. Embedded images and heavily formatted documents are harder to work with because we need to extract and edit the text. Fully designed PDFs are particularly awkward as they have to be rebuilt from scratch for publication.

Copyright and image rights

Any content you include in your article should be your own, or you should have permission to use it. This applies to any images you submit too - please take screenshots and photos yourself wherever possible. We are a small publisher and can't afford legal disputes over image rights.

Proofreading and editorial changes

As with all in-house content, your articles go through multiple proofreading and editing passes before publication. We may make editorial changes to correct errors, improve flow and ensure content meets the standards our readers expect. We will not intentionally alter the meaning of your article.

In the rare event we need to make a change that affects meaning, or if we have difficulty understanding part of the content, we'll consult you as soon as possible.
